چکیده

The See Color interface transforms a small portion of a colored video image into sound sources represented by spatialized musical instruments. Basically, the conversion of colors into sounds is achieved by quantization of the HSL color system. Our purpose is to provide visually impaired individuals with a capability of perception of the environment in real time. In this work the novelty is the simultaneous sonification of color and depth, depth being coded by sound rhythm. Our sonification model is illustrated by several experiments, such as: (1) detecting an open door in order to go out from the office; (2) walking in a hallway and looking for a blue cabinet; (3) walking in a hallway and looking for a red tee shirt; (4) moving outside and avoiding a parked car. Videos with sounds of experiments are available on http://www.youtube.com/guidobologna.

Personal Adaptive Mobility Aid for the Infirm and Elderly Blind

This technical report describes ongoing research into the development of a robotic mobility aid (PAM-AID) for people with a visually impairment who also require support during walking. These disabilities coincide most often in the elderly and as the elderly constitute almost two thirds of all blind people (due to the fact that blindness occurs most often in the over 65's) we feel that this atte...

Improving orientation and mobility skills through virtual environments for people who are blind: past research and future potential

This presented paper describes and examines 21 virtual environments developed specifically to support people who are blind in collecting spatial information before arrival at a new location and to help people who are newly blind practice orientation and mobility skills during rehabilitation. The paper highlights weaknesses and strengths of virtual environments that have been developed in the pa...

Wearable Real-Time Stereo Vision for the Visually Impaired

Visually impaired find their navigation difficult as they often lack the needed information for bypassing obstacles and hazards. Electronic Travel Aids (ETAs) are devices that use sensor technology to assist and improve the blind user’s mobility in terms of safety and speed. Modern ETAs does not provide distance information directly and clearly. This paper proposes a method for determining dist...

A Modular Computer Vision Sonification Model for the Visually Impaired

This paper presents a Modular Computer Vision Sonification Model which is a general framework for acquisition, exploration and sonification of visual information to support visually impaired people. The model exploits techniques from Computer Vision and aims to convey as much information as possible about the image to the user, including color, edges and what we refer to as Orientation maps and...
